So Close
Hu Shenyuan
China
“So Close” is a dance solo reinterpreting the unique body curves of China’s Dai ethnic dance, thereby exploring the boundary between tradition and modernity. The piece reflects Shenyuan’s contemplation on the distance between inheritance and development by means of an interpretation of the Chinese character “人”. According to Shenyuan’s interpretation, “人” abstractly expresses an individual walking forward with an independent will, exploring and reaching outwards. From another perspective, it also represents the interdependence and connection between two individuals. Though we exist as individuals, development and evolution require mutual support and collaboration. By interpreting the pictogram of the Chinese character, Shenyuan expresses a desire to reach out and connect with the outside world, thereby demonstrating a distance which often appears unreachable, but is in fact most closely related to one’s own inner feelings.
