The 8th feature film by China‘s prominent filmmaker Jia Zhangke portrays the complex life of Tao, a shopkeeper and an amateur dancer at a remote mining town in Western China, and of those close to her, in three different periods: 1999, 2014 and 2025. The film is set in mainland China and Australia. Mountains May Depart raises both subtle and tough questions of relations, family, tradition, modernity, commercialism and identity in past, present and future Modern China. The film was presented at Cannes Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival (2015).
